I read this book when it first came out and it was very helpful at the time. But now it is more like a history book on the beginnings on the publics recognition of the value of the Internet and how to use it at the time( which was the mid-90s ). So much has changed that I would hate for any newbie to buy this book as a guide to the present day Internet. There are many good current and useful books out there. In my opinion one of the best is “The Whole Internet-The Next Generation” from O’Reilly.

It is a comprehensive description of the former so vital SLIP and PPP protocols, which used to drive the entire planet toward where we are now. Literally. Get it and read it only if you are interested in the research of the past. Describes usage with Windows and Macintosh, ftp, telnet, WAIS, Gopher, Usenet news, and of course web with-sit down now-Mosaic and Netscape! Welcome to aisle one Tech Museum. Of course the subject has no relevance for contemporary 2009 online communications. Or do you still use a dial up modem?
